Across Europe, the UK and even in Victoria, Australia, each year there's nominations and a competition for the Best Tree Award. "Celebrating and recognising remarkable trees for their cultural and ecological significance", trees nominations are short listed then put to a public vote (geogrpahical.co.uk). This year the UK winner was an Argyle Street Ash and last year the Skipinnish Oak - a 400-year-old Scottish oak. Among the nominations were the 2000-year-old 'Borrowdale Yew Trees', mentioned in poetry by William Wordsworth.
This simple competition is a wonderful way to draw attention to trees and their value .to the world. It would be fantastic in years to come, if the Best Tree Award spread across the globe, to draw attention to the strong silent sentinels that continue to give their gifts each day and night, all year round.
