May 20th is World Bee Day!! We all need bees to pollinate our fruit and seed-bearing plants, not to mention their delicious honey and multi-use beeswax from their honeycomb.
I've made a quick YouTube on my channel, @TheAnastasiaPlan featuring bees from my garden. The recent long youTube video featured a story about the native bee population - without whom we would not have our tomatoes, capsicums, eggplant etc, in the solanaceae family, whose tiny flowers are too small for pollination by the European bees. We can help our bee populations by planting flowering plants - an all year-round supply if possible - climatic conditions permitting!! Flowering plants which bees love include blue, white and yellow flowers. Fruit trees, flowering vegetables and open flowers all provide nectar and pollen for our bees. A supply of water (bird bath) with a stick across so the bees can climb out, is also needed in high summer.
Bees are extraordinary creatures, with incredible building abilities and behaviours which we have much to learn about.
